JRC contribution

Around 20 people at JRC are currently setting up the building blocks of the DOPA. Here below is the staff involved in the coordination of the setting up of the various components of DOPA.

Permanent staff
external image P1060729.JPG Brink, Andreas holds a MSc in Geography with specialization in Remote Sensing from the University of Trier, Germany. He worked at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Rome for four years dealing with land cover related issues in South East Asia. In 2005 he moved to the JRC where he is since then managing the issues of competition for land and landcover change in Africa. He was responsible of the Africa part of the global TREES3 project on tropical deforestation and is now coordinating the development of the tools designed to measure pressure on protected areas, in particular through the assessment of the landcover change in and around protected areas for the DOPA.

external image small_IMG_0195_0.jpg Clerici, Marco received the B.S. degree in electronic engineering, specializing in microelectronics and instrumentation, from the University Politecnico di Milano, Milan, Italy, in 1993. He has been with EUMETSAT from 2000 to 2004 providing software development support for the MSG/SEVIRI vicarious calibration and for the development of radiative transfer models. His work focuses on the eStation, the monitoring component of the DOPA based on earth observations. He is implementing the operational algorithms and systems for the land and vegetation characterization from remote sensing, applied to the global and continental scale, with a focus on applications for the African continent.

He graduated in Information Science at University of Milan (Italy), Telematics Laboratory. He worked at the European Commission JRC for the Image2000 project, Nuclear Safeguards in the framework of the Additional Protocol (SIT), Environmental information systems ESDAC (European Soil Data Centre) and EFDAC (European Forest Data Centre) and the implementation of the digital platform of New World Atlas on Desertification (WAD). In the Land Resource Management Unit he is involved in the Ecosystem Services Partnership initiative and in the RECARE (remediate against soil degradation) project.

external image small_Steve_Peedell.jpg Peedell, Stephen is a Senior Scientific Officer at the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission. His qualifications include a Masters degree in Natural Resource Management and, since joining JRC in 1996, he has been involved in many European initiatives combining geospatial technology and environmental decision making. In particular he has worked on the development of the INSPIRE Directive and designing and building geographic information systems supporting Natura2000 and the Water Framework Directive. In 2009 he joined the Land Resource Management Unit where he is working on developing spatial databases, catalogues and interoperable web services for geoinformation.

Paolo is an Agronomist who first workd for the European delegations before joining the headquarters in Brussels to work on conservation issues in the African, Caibbean and Pacific countries (ACP). At the JRC since 2006, Paolo is currently in charge of various projects and contributes to the DOPA by developing the component dealing with the management effectiveness of protected areas.

Visiting scientists
external image small_LBastin.jpg Bastin, Lucy comes from Birmingham, UK, where her interest in spatial ecology began with work on green corridors for the local Wildlife Trust. After studying Zoology at Nottingham University, she gained a Masters’ in GIS and a PhD on metapopulation and source-sink dynamics of plant species in the urban habitat mosaic. Her postdoctoral work on the EU FP5 FLIERS project focussed on fuzzy classification of vegetation communities from remote sensing and the efficient visualization of this uncertain information. After a further 3 years as an industrial software developer with Tadpole-Cartesia (Edinburgh) she became a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science at Aston University, UK, generating interdisciplinary collaborations with a variety of domains including microbiologists, agricultural specialists, economists and town planners. Lucy is in charge of the development of the new web versions of the main DOPA web clients (Explorer, Validator and Analyst) as well as of the modeling web processing services.

external image Bastian.JPG Bertzky, Bastian joined the JRC as a post-doctoral researcher in June 2013 with a specialist background in conservation science and policy. His qualifications include degrees in Geography and Conservation Biology. Bastian has been working on protected areas for the past ten years. In IUCN Headquarters he was involved in the monitoring of existing World Heritage sites and evaluation of new World Heritage nominations. At the UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) he coordinated work on global protected area indicators, and various analyses on protected areas and World Heritage sites. At JRC he is supporting the development of the ACP Observatory for Sustainable Development, the Digital Observatory for Protected Areas (DOPA) and the Biodiversity and Protected Area Management (BIOPAMA) project.

His qualifications include a degree in Tropical Ecology and an MSc in Conservation Biology. He has worked for over 15 years on using and applying biodiversity informatics for conservation gain, firstly for the UK Government and then at the World Conservation Monitoring Centre in Cambridge. His particular area of expertise is in web GIS and in 2011 he won the ESRI Conservation Mapping Competition for the Critical Site Network Tool. In 2011 he joined the GEM unit to concentrate on developing global species indicators and cross-sector analyses.
